Junior Presentation Evening

Steve set up the Juniors Academy at Thurlestone several years ago and it has developed each year with over thirty children attending each week now. This year twelve of the Academy children entered the Golf Foundation’s juniors 6’s League which meant that a squad of 12 players were picked to represent Thurlestone in this mini league against other Devon clubs and were presented with their trophies.

In 2023 the Juniors team played in the Tamar Cup knockout, the Devon County Basil Steer knockout, the West Devon League and Strashleigh Cup. Sadly, they were knocked out by Exeter in the Basil Steer, but reached the final of the Tamar Cup, where they were defeated by 2-1 matches by Exeter again. The team had been presented with their runners up trophies at the final at Elfordleigh. 

The junior’s team in 2023 were Noah Mulligan (junior captain) George Inch, William Hoskin, Aiden Mulligan, Martha Massingham, Jake Brooker and Oliver Chester.

The junior’s Gross championship cup was won by George Inch with gross 74 and the Handicap Cup was won by Will Robson with nett 66. Noah Mulligan gave a speech welcoming George Inch as our new junior’s captain for 2024. 

The most trophies were won by William Hoskin who reduced his handicap from 13 to 4 during the year and won the Jades components Cup. He also won the Emery cup for best scratch score of 71 in the men’s club championship first round, and the President’s cup for most improved junior, and the Summer Cup. Martha Massingham won the Eric Wilson Cup for most improved girl, reducing her handicap by 9 points from 36 to 27. Abbie Robinson won the Junior Girls cup for playing in the most competitions. 

The Access golf program at Thurlestone led by Steve White and Jack Wallace continues to encourage the younger juniors to work towards a handicap and two trophies were awarded for Access golf. Leo Willmott won the Tabiner cup for most improved junior and Ted Clayton won the Buckland Tout Saints Trophy for the best scores in Access golf.
